Future 6G applications such as XR, telepresence, digital twins, and autonomous robotics will generate massive volumes of uplink sensory data while requiring low latency and high user quality of experience (QoE). However, the edge devices that generate this data are constrained by limited computation, energy, transmit power, and bandwidth, making the uplink the primary bottleneck for intelligent 6G services.
Existing bit-centric and semantic communication approaches suffer from poor low-SNR performance or impose high computational burdens on the transmitter. In IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, researchers address these challenges by proposing LiTCom, a lightweight transmitter and inference-capable receiver framework for 6G uplinks.
LiTCom leverages the computational asymmetry between edge devices and network infrastructure by minimizing transmitter complexity and utilizing powerful receiver-side generative AI models to infer semantically meaningful content from compressed, distorted, and error-degraded signals. This shifts the communication objective from bit-perfect recovery to semantic reconstruction, enabling robust operation in low-SNR environments.
The main contributions of the article are:
- A novel uplink framework combining lightweight transmitter-side coding with GenAI-based semantic reconstruction at the receiver.
- Theoretical foundations for semantic-preserving source coding and robust channel coding.
- A QoE-driven evaluation framework with a perceived uplink coverage metric and importance-aware power allocation.
Principles of LiTCom
LiTCom is a communication framework designed for robust 6G uplink transmission from resource-constrained edge devices operating in low-SNR environments. Unlike conventional systems that prioritize quality of service (QoS) metrics such as reliability and throughput, LiTCom focuses on maximizing users' semantic quality of experience (QoE).
The researchers note that LiTCom centers on an inference-capable receiver that uses large-scale generative AI (GenAI) models as a source decoder. Rather than requiring perfect reconstruction, LiTCom only needs the transmitted representation to preserve sufficient semantic information. Missing or distorted details can then be inferred at the receiver, enabling high-quality semantic reconstruction even when compression and channel impairments degrade the received signal.

Illustrative diagram of sufficient and insufficient representations. Grey regions are distorted information during compression in the subprocess, while the orange parts represent inferred information during the subprocess.
The framework is particularly suitable for data modalities with strong spatial, temporal, or spectral structures and mature generative restoration models, such as images, audio, and video. For image transmission, the transmitter generates a low-resolution semantic representation and partitions data according to sub-pixel importance. At the same time, the receiver leverages GenAI to reconstruct perceptually and semantically meaningful content from degraded observations.
Overall, LiTCom shifts communication complexity from the edge device to the network infrastructure, enabling lightweight transmission while maintaining high semantic fidelity.
Simulation Results and Discussion
Overall, LiTCom demonstrates strong robustness in low-SNR environments, consistently outperforming conventional communication schemes in perceptual quality and semantic fidelity. In practical deployments, generative decoding can be implemented as a shared AI resource and scheduled according to latency requirements, user priority, and available accelerator capacity.
Simulation results demonstrate that LiTCom reduces transmitter-side computational complexity by over 95% while achieving up to 8 dB and 2.5 dB SNR gains compared with 5G NR-like and Deep-JSCC baselines, respectively.
Despite these promising results, the authors outline several remaining challenges:
- Limited validation on static image transmission
- Uncertainty about performance across different models and deployment scenarios
- Robustness under severe channel impairments
- Preservation of task-critical high-frequency information
- Extension to multi-user and multi-modal communications
- Providing a comprehensive assessment of the energy efficiency of GenAI-enabled receivers
Addressing these challenges is essential for advancing LiTCom toward practical 6G deployment. LiTCom provides a foundation for future wireless systems that prioritize semantic understanding and user experience, enabling intelligent 6G applications such as XR, digital twins, telepresence, and autonomous systems.
